Isn’t Labor Day great? I’ve only been back to school for about a month, but I am in desperate need of a break! I don’t care what grade you teach, the first weeks of school are just plain hard! We are all trying to establish a routine and manage learning new content at the same time! It’s fast paced and difficult! I’m using this day off to recuperate and recharge!
Here’s my planning process and visual plans for this coming week. Since it’s a 4 day week, we are having a review language arts skill of sentences and sentence fragments. Yes, this is an easy skill, but I think it’s one that needs to be reviewed. I see a LOT of sentence fragments when we begin writing each year, so I’m hoping that devoting an entire week’s skill to this will help! You can find my Strategic Teaching BDA Lesson on Sentence/Sentence Fragments here.
This is the second week of our vocabulary cycle, so we have already completed our vocabulary journals. Let me know if you want to know how I ended up using vocabulary journals. I’m really pleased with the simple result! Since we’ve already completed journals, this week we get to interact more with our words and play some “games” I’m planning on introducing “Counting Dude, Bragging Dude” this week and teaching them about 7 up sentences. You can find out about these activities and many more in Word Nerds. I did a book study this summer with this book and you can find each chapter breakdown here, with the exception of Chapter 8, because I’m still working on how I want to do assessments…more on that later!

I would love to know more about your vocabulary journals. I am trying to implement Word Nerds this year as well. We did the first round using the template given in the book but it seemed to take up TONS of class time getting them filled in. I'm looking for better ideas.
