Comprehension Bins Breakdown

Classroom· Uncategorized

Hi friends? Can you hear me crying? Today is my last day of summer! I’m trying to make the most of it by being extra lazy and getting in lots of reading and Netflix, but I wanted to share with y’all what’s inside my comprehension bins since a lot of you have been asking. I shared what I’m teaching the first grading period here, so after I decided the skills, I went in search of resources!

For story elements, I created a unit filled with resources. Lots of times I do this and then forget to actually use it! So, after I created it, I printed it out and bound it into a book so I won’t forget!

You can check them out here.

Sadly I’m still looking for resources on summarizing. I’d love to hear your thoughts and favorite resources! 🙂

Up next is Figurative Language.

This is from my Figurative Language unit.

I got this from Erin Cobb. I love this resource!

Moving onto Theme

This is one of my resources. It has 10 passages in it that are written to identify the theme of a text.

If I have a good text from another resource I also included it in the bin. This set from Storyworks will be our anchor text that week. I love that the vocabulary is already selected in these texts and activities are included for them.

Characterization is what we will be starting off the year with. It’s also my favorite thing to teach so I can’t wait to share with y’all what fun activities we are doing!

I went ahead and put my Comp Files in this bin so I wouldn’t forget them. I like assigning these for homework and since that’s our first official week, I wanted to make sure and organize them into the rotation.

Since we are also beginning Frindle, I included my novel guide for it.

And a book copy (my teacher copy where I make notes), along with the vocabulary words.

How many of y’all are still in summer mode? Who’s already gone back? Let me know in a comment below. 🙂

Our kiddos come back on Friday and I've been back since Monday. Definitely hard getting back in the groove for sure! In your Frindle unit, are the words on the sticky note the only vocabulary you use for the entire novel? I'd love to see a post on how you pace a novel study!! Have a great year!

Lawanna, I have 7, but I narrowed those down to 5 to fit in with Word Nerds. Yes, those are the only ones because I'm doing a 10 day cycle instead of 5 and we will finish the novel in 2 weeks. Frindle is a short novel, though, so longer novels will have more vocabulary sets. 🙂

We go back to work on Friday and the students come back next Wednesday. I love teaching but hate the insanely early wake up time! I agree with the comment above about loving a post on how you pace your novel study. Have you ever looked at the summarizing activities from Runde's Room on TPT? The set has tons of great resources and activities you can use with any novel.

I love these bins, where did you get them? Also, are those your vocabulary words for Frindle using your new Word Nerd model or are they old ones? I can't wait to see your lesson plan posts each Sunday! Thank you for sharing! Good luck tomorrow!!! Hopefully you have some cuties! I'd love to see pictures of your final room reveal!

Wal Mart! They are the new ones, but I narrowed it down to 5. That sticky note was written before I decided on 5. I'm hoping to have final room reveal up this weekend! Crossing my fingers!! 🙂

Thank you! I have about a bagillion questions for you and can't wait to see what you do. We don't go back until Sept. 8th with kids so I will get to see your great ideas work first 😉

I just got my bins like that at Walmart. Leslie, would you please consider listing your labels on TPT. I'd much rather just print them than have to make them in all my free time during back to school week. 😆

Yes! I will upload them this weekend and if I've forgotten, just leave me another comment 🙂

Love all of your posts! I check check them all the time for great ideas to use in my classroom. I have a question with your the teaching of characterization. Do you only use Frindle to teach this? Hope you have enjoyed your first few days back 🙂

Just found your blog and am enjoying it! I'm curious about the resource you have in the 2nd Frindle pic (pink sticky note), under the novel itself. Looks intriguing! 🙂

Would it be possible for you to share our labels for these bins?? We teach the same thing and are following a lot of your scope and sequence and weekly plan ideas and thought it would be great to just borrow your labels 🙂

What I read this week 🩷📖 It took me all wee What I read this week 🩷📖

It took me all week to read The Favorites by Layne Fargo, which usually means I’m not loving a book, but I’m thrilled that’s not the case with this book! It was just a super busy week for me so I didn’t read as much every day as I wanted, but I absolutely LOVED this book! It releases January 14, so mark your calendars now! I don’t even love figure skating/ ice dancing (honestly I’ve never even heard of this) and I still was obsessed with this book. Highly highly recommend!

Synopsis:

She might not have a famous name, funding, or her family’s support, but Katarina Shaw has always known that she was destined to become an Olympic skater. When she meets Heath Rocha, a lonely kid stuck in the foster care system, their instant connection makes them a formidable duo on the ice. Clinging to skating—and each other—to escape their turbulent lives, Kat and Heath go from childhood sweethearts to champion ice dancers, captivating the world with their scorching chemistry, rebellious style, and roller-coaster relationship.

Until a shocking incident at the Olympic Games brings their partnership to a sudden end.

As the ten-year anniversary of their final skate approaches, an unauthorized documentary reignites the public obsession with Shaw and Rocha, claiming to uncover the “real story” through interviews with their closest friends and fiercest rivals. Kat wants nothing to do with the documentary, but she can’t stand the thought of someone else defining her legacy. So, after a decade of silence, she’s telling her story: from the childhood tragedies that created her all-consuming bond with Heath to the clash of desires that tore them apart. Sensational rumors have haunted their every step for years, but the truth may be even more shocking than the headlines
