December 2022 Book Reviews

Books

It’s time for the final book reviews of 2022. I read 8 books in December, and they were all mostly 4 and 5 stars. It was a pretty good month overall. I even read my favorite thriller of the year during the last month of 2022!

Let’s chat about my December books.

Well, That Was Unexpected by Jesse Q. Sutanto

Add to Goodreads/Purchase on Amazon

I started off the month with this young adult contemporary. Y’all know I’ve rediscovered my love for YA this year, and since I had a Once Upon a Book Club box for this book, I decided to pick it up. I am SO glad I did. Well, This Was Unexpected is written by Jesse Q. Sutanto, who also wrote Dial A for Aunties. I never had any interest in that book until I read this one. I absolutely loved Well, That Was Unexpected and Sutanto’s writing. I’ve definitely added her adult rom com to my TBR now!

Rating: 4.5 stars

The Do-Over by Lynn Painter

Add to Goodreads/Purchase on Amazon

Lynn Painter has been an author that I discovered in 2022 and fell in love with. I’ve been patiently waiting for her new YA contemporary for the longest, and it didn’t disappoint! This was a groundhog’s day storyline about a girl who relives Valentine’s Day multiple times. It was really cute.

Rating: 4 stars

A Very Merry Bromance by Lyssa Kay Adams

Add to Goodreads/Purchase on Amazon

The Bromance series by Lyssa Kay Adams is one of my favorite romance series, and I’ve been eagerly anticipating Colton’s story for the longest. It was worth the wait! This may be tied with book 2 for my favorite in the series. They are all so swoony and funny.

Rating: 5 stars

The Family Game by Catherine Steadman

Add to Goodreads/Purchase on Amazon

The Family Game was never on my radar until I saw someone share that it was a mystery/thriller set during Christmas. This intrigued me, so I decided to pick it up. It was really good, but the ending was very far-fetched. I don’t normally mind an unbelievable ending, but this one was a little too much for me. I didn’t feel like it fit with the rest of the story. I would still recommend it though!

Rating: 3.75 stars

Two Wrongs Make a Right by Chloe Liese

Add to Goodreads/Purchase on Amazon

I’ve never read a Chloe Liese book, but this one had been on my list for quite some time. I enjoyed it, but I thought I would have loved it more than I did. It had great diversity and mental health rep, but sometimes the characters were a little too understanding of one another if that makes sense. I don’t know how to explain it, but I felt like at times it bordered a little too after-school special. The characters were so understanding of each other’s needs that at times it felt unnatural and false. I did like the story though!

Rating: 4 stars

The Good Lie by A.R. Torre

Add to Goodreads/Purchase on Amazon

The Good Lie may have been the last thriller I read in 2022, but it was also my favorite! I had already written my top 10 favorite books of 2022 before reading this AR Torre thriller, but it exceeded my expectations and blew me away! Some mystery/thrillers tend to run together and have the same basic storyline, but this was completely different. I LOVED it!

Rating: 5 stars

Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak

Add to Goodreads/Purchase on Amazon

A horror book? That I loved? What?? I’ll admit, if I hadn’t been seeing Hidden Pictures everywhere, I probably wouldn’t have picked it up, but I’m so glad I did! This was such a fun and unique story. The pictures included in the book made it even better. It was such an interactive read. I loved this one!

Rating: 5 stars

Flawless by Elsie Silver

Add to Goodreads/Purchase on Amazon

Y’all, I think my swooner is broken LOL. I had been saving Flawless for the longest, and I was so excited about this book. I have heard SO many people rave about it. I just wasn’t a fan. I definitely think it was just a me/timing thing because I seem to be off my swoony rom com game. I really want to read a romance that I just am consumed by, but this wasn’t it. The search continues!

Rating: 3 stars

What I read this week 🩷📖 It took me all wee What I read this week 🩷📖

It took me all week to read The Favorites by Layne Fargo, which usually means I’m not loving a book, but I’m thrilled that’s not the case with this book! It was just a super busy week for me so I didn’t read as much every day as I wanted, but I absolutely LOVED this book! It releases January 14, so mark your calendars now! I don’t even love figure skating/ ice dancing (honestly I’ve never even heard of this) and I still was obsessed with this book. Highly highly recommend!

Synopsis:

She might not have a famous name, funding, or her family’s support, but Katarina Shaw has always known that she was destined to become an Olympic skater. When she meets Heath Rocha, a lonely kid stuck in the foster care system, their instant connection makes them a formidable duo on the ice. Clinging to skating—and each other—to escape their turbulent lives, Kat and Heath go from childhood sweethearts to champion ice dancers, captivating the world with their scorching chemistry, rebellious style, and roller-coaster relationship.

Until a shocking incident at the Olympic Games brings their partnership to a sudden end.

As the ten-year anniversary of their final skate approaches, an unauthorized documentary reignites the public obsession with Shaw and Rocha, claiming to uncover the “real story” through interviews with their closest friends and fiercest rivals. Kat wants nothing to do with the documentary, but she can’t stand the thought of someone else defining her legacy. So, after a decade of silence, she’s telling her story: from the childhood tragedies that created her all-consuming bond with Heath to the clash of desires that tore them apart. Sensational rumors have haunted their every step for years, but the truth may be even more shocking than the headlines
