I’m so excited for today’s post because I’m sharing my first Once Upon a Book Club unboxing! I have seen this book subscription box all over Instagram for the longest, and I was thrilled to finally try out a box.
A little about Once Upon a Book Club:
- They have several different subscription options. You can do a year, 6 months, 3 months, or month to month subscriptions. You can also simply purchase individual boxes.
- They have both adult and young adult options.
- You can also purchase apparel, artwork, books, and more. It’s not just subscription boxes!
- The monthly boxes are a surprise, which makes the experience so fun! They provide hints so you can try and guess what the book is going to be.
- You can use my code LALALIFE10 for 10% off.
The box I received is the Through Thick and Thin box. You can see it here. Here’s what the box looks like when you first open it.
The box contains:
- One hardback book
- A book club guide
- bookmark
- signed by author label
- book card
- 3 wrapped goodies that go with the included book.
The book that is included in the Through Thick and Thin box is We Are Not Like Them by Christine Pride and Jo Piazza. Here’s what the book is about:
Jen and Riley have been best friends since kindergarten. As adults, they remain as close as sisters, though their lives have taken different directions. Jen married young, and after years of trying, is finally pregnant. Riley pursued her childhood dream of becoming a television journalist and is poised to become one of the first Black female anchors of the top news channel in their hometown of Philadelphia.
But the deep bond they share is severely tested when Jen’s husband, a city police officer, is involved in the shooting of an unarmed Black teenager. Six months pregnant, Jen is in freefall as her future, her husband’s freedom, and her friendship with Riley are thrown into uncertainty. Covering this career-making story, Riley wrestles with the implications of this tragic incident for her Black community, her ambitions, and her relationship with her lifelong friend.
Like Tayari Jones’s An American Marriage and Jodi Picoult’s Small Great Things, We Are Not Like Them explores complex questions of race and how they pervade and shape our most intimate spaces in a deeply divided world. But at its heart, it’s a story of enduring friendship—a love that defies the odds even as it faces its most difficult challenges.
You can add it to your Goodreads here.
The box comes with three wrapped surprises that go along with the book. Each goodie contains a page number. You are supposed to wait until you reach that page number to open the little trinket. How fun is that? I think this just makes the reading experience even more interactive and special. I also makes me want to start reading this book immediately because I’m dying to find out what is in each gift! It’s like Christmas!
You also receive a book club kit that tells more about the book. This would be good to use if you are using the book as part of your book club.
I think this is such a fun and unique book subscription box. It would make the perfect gift if you have a reader or family member who is a big reader. They would love it!
