Happy weekend, friends! I know it’s Saturday, but I got held up after school yesterday and didn’t make it back in time to get the Friday Five post together. BUT I wanted to make sure I didn’t skip this week’s topic or delay it because these books are just too good not to share right this minute.
You know how you can read a good book and enjoy it, but then some books you read just consume your every thought and you can’t do anything without thinking about them? I’m chatting about those types of books today. Obsession level books are rare and special, and I know you will love these just as much as I did. Just be sure and clear your schedule because your to do list will be majorly neglected during these reads!
A Court of Thorns and Roses/Mist and Fury by Sara J. Mass
Okay, let’s start with the most random and different obsession level book in my stack. Let me tell you, high fantasy books are not my thing. I don’t find them appealing or interesting in the slightest. When I first discovered “booktube” (youtube for books) back in 2014/2015, everyone was raving about Sarah J. Mass’ series A Court of Thorns and Roses (book 1) and A Court of Mist and Fury (book 2.) I decided against it every time because it definitely wasn’t my thing. But you know how sometimes you see something enough times that you start to grow curious about it. I decided to just *try* it out and see what all the fuss was about. The first book is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast and that really sold me. I started reading and y’all. I was hooked. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever read and I haven’t picked up another high fantasy book since, but I highly recommend this series (the first two books anyways.) I haven’t continued on in the series because the third came out a few years after I had read the second. I do plan on finishing the series though! I highly recommend the first two. I was 10000% a fan of the male lead in the first book and hated another character and then completely reversed my thinking in the 2nd book. No other book has ever made me change my opinion of the couple pairings between books. Sooooo good!
Come Back to Me by Mila Gray
I read Mila Gray’s book, Come Back to Me, before I even started my bookstagram account, so I have no book photograph for this one, but oh my goodness, talk about a book I inhaled. I read this over Christmas break back in 2015 and I couldn’t think of anything else. My mom and I always go to the movies on Christmas day in the afternoons and I remember it was pouring down rain that Christmas day so we decided to skip the movies. I ended up reading all afternoon and finishing the book. Ahh! I loved this one so much. I wish I had read this one and chatted with y’all about it because it’s one that you just want to talk about and obsess over. It’s about a girl who is in love with her brother’s best friend. At the beginning of the book you know that the brother and best friend go away to Iraq or Afghanistan and only one comes back. This is actually the first book in the series, but each can be read as a stand alone. There isn’t a cliffhanger at the end.
The After Series by Anna Todd
Oh the After series. You knew this one was coming, didn’t you?? If you have followed my bookstagram account for a while, you know my thoughts on the After series by Anna Todd. There’s a highlight tab on my Instagram profile if you want to go back and see my real time reactions to reading this one (lol), but let me just preface this by saying this is by far the worst series I’ve ever read, but by the end of it (all 2,000 pages later) I could not rave about it any louder. Yes, the writing is atrocious. Yes, the characters are so very flawed. And yes, the plot is ridiculous. There are so many cringe worthy parts and crude at times, but I was absolutely consumed by this series. I mean, I spent every afternoon from the time I got home to the time I went to bed reading these books for a good week.
It’s about a girl who meets a boy when she moves into her college dorm. He insults her and she is offended. Then they get to know each other and things happen. Oh goodness it’s so awful that it’s actually good.
The Idea of You by Robinne Lee
Another book that sounds exactly like something I wouldn’t love, but after seeing another bookstagrammer rave about it, I decided to try it out. I’m always curious when someone says they were consumed by a book. They were spot on with this one. Once I finished the book, I actually googled to find a Facebook group for it LOL (Just FYI, after you read and finish this one, feel free to message me and I’ll share the group with you…you’re going to need to chat with others about it.) This one is about a woman who takes her daughter and her friends to a concert for a boyband. They go backstage and meet the band, and the mom falls in love with the lead singer. Yes, this sounds ridiculous, but I cannot recommend it enough. There’s just something magical about this one. I actually felt physically sick when I finished it. I know that is insane, but The Idea of You is definitely obsession level. It probably fits the description of this post the best out of all five of these books.
28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand
28 Summers is the most recent obsession level book I’ve read. It’s also my first Elin Hilderbrand book. What a way to discover an author! Y’all, I felt like I was actually in this book with the characters. I felt like this fictional world was actually real and these were real people. I’ve never cried so much by the ending of the book. It was everything I wanted.
It’s about a girl and boy who meet on Labor Day weekend in 1993. They have an amazing weekend together, but neither are willing to give up their life. They decide to meet up every Labor Day weekend, no matter what is going on in their life. The book follows every Labor Day weekend for the next 28 years.
Okay, those are five of my favorite obsession level books that consumed my life. Have y’all read any of these? What are some of your obsession level books??
