The Friday Five: 5 Unexpected Favorite Books

Books· featured

Happy Friday! In this week’s edition of the Friday Five, I’m sharing 5 unexpected favorite books. Now, most of the time we pick up a book hoping it will be good. These books ended up becoming lifelong favorites that I still think about loooong after I’ve turned the last page. I’m so excited to share these titles with y’all!

All of these can be found in my new Amazon storefront if you’re interested in any particular title. Thank you all for your support for my bookclub. I just love sharing and chatting about fabulous reads with all of y’all!

Let’s get started with today’s post!

All These Beautiful Strangers by Elizabeth Klehfoth

I read this one in the summer of 2018 and it became my second favorite book of the year. I had never heard of this title until I saw it on a Youtube video from a booktuber. I’ve still never seen it talked about a lot, but let me tell you, I LOVED it! It’s about a girl who goes to a boarding school and tries to get into a secret society. Through the process she learns about her family’s past-including her mother’s disappearance long ago. This one is the perfect summer read!

The Idea of You by Robinne Lee

I picked this one up after hearing another bookstagrammer rave about it. It sounded completely unlike anything I would like. It’s about a mother who falls in love with a 20 year old boy band member when she takes her daughter and her friends to a concert. I know, I know. It sounds ridiculous. But let me tell you. I have NEVER been so obsessed with a book as I was with this one. I had to join the Facebook group to obsess with others over it. Y’all, read this. Then email me for the Facebook group because you’re going to want in.

Sidenote: this one is r rated!

Moonshot by Alessandra Torre

I’m throwing it wayyyyy back to 2015 or 2016 with this one! Writing this post has made me want to reread Moonshot because I don’t remember a lot about it, but I remember LOVING it! It’s about a girl whose dad is the manager for a MLB team (I think. Again, it’s been awhile) She falls in love with one of the players and then he gets traded to another team. I’m going to have to reread this one now! I had read two AT books when I first read this and I remember just falling in love with this story when I did not expect to love it as much. It was one of the first “obsession level” reads for me LOL

28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand

If you’ve been a long time follower of my book club, you will probably remember my obsession with this book. I had never read an Elin Hilderbrand book before I read this one last summer. I remember picking up one of her books in college and not loving it so I never read any. I decided to try her out again as an adult last summer and this book nearly broke me. Oh my goodness this book! It’s about a woman who is dying and asks her son to call a number that she wrote on a piece of paper. When the son does, he is shocked to discover that it’s the husband of the current presidential nominee! The book spans over 28 summers and tells the love story of two characters. You will love. And cry. But mostly love.

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Now, I love TJR but this book had two things going against it before I finally convinced myself to pick it up.

  1. I had just finished The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and didn’t love it. I know, I’m the only one. I just felt like her answer to every problem was to get married!
  2. It was about a rock band from the 70s, which is not even remotely interesting to me.

BUT I decided to pick it up anyways. And y’all. I LOVED this book. I felt like the characters had become my family. And that twist?!? I literally gasped when I discovered what was happening. It was insanely good!

Okay, those were 5 unexpected favorites from me. They can all be found here if you want to check them out. I’d love to hear if y’all have read any of these or what books took you by surprise!

Be sure and check out my other Friday Five posts!

What I read this week 🩷📖 It took me all wee What I read this week 🩷📖

It took me all week to read The Favorites by Layne Fargo, which usually means I’m not loving a book, but I’m thrilled that’s not the case with this book! It was just a super busy week for me so I didn’t read as much every day as I wanted, but I absolutely LOVED this book! It releases January 14, so mark your calendars now! I don’t even love figure skating/ ice dancing (honestly I’ve never even heard of this) and I still was obsessed with this book. Highly highly recommend!

Synopsis:

She might not have a famous name, funding, or her family’s support, but Katarina Shaw has always known that she was destined to become an Olympic skater. When she meets Heath Rocha, a lonely kid stuck in the foster care system, their instant connection makes them a formidable duo on the ice. Clinging to skating—and each other—to escape their turbulent lives, Kat and Heath go from childhood sweethearts to champion ice dancers, captivating the world with their scorching chemistry, rebellious style, and roller-coaster relationship.

Until a shocking incident at the Olympic Games brings their partnership to a sudden end.

As the ten-year anniversary of their final skate approaches, an unauthorized documentary reignites the public obsession with Shaw and Rocha, claiming to uncover the “real story” through interviews with their closest friends and fiercest rivals. Kat wants nothing to do with the documentary, but she can’t stand the thought of someone else defining her legacy. So, after a decade of silence, she’s telling her story: from the childhood tragedies that created her all-consuming bond with Heath to the clash of desires that tore them apart. Sensational rumors have haunted their every step for years, but the truth may be even more shocking than the headlines
