The Friday Five: Spooky Thrillers

Books

Happy Friday, friends! It’s officially October. Bring on all the spooky thrillers! Today I’m sharing 5 of my favorite mystery/thrillers that have a spooky feel to them. They aren’t necessarily horror, but they will definitely put you in a Halloween mood!

The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware

Ruth Ware is a hit or miss author for me, but The Turn of the Key is my favorite book of hers. It has such a spooky vibe to it. The perfect book to read in October. It’s eerie-but not scary. It’s about a girl who answers an ad to become a nanny to two children. She moves into their creepy smart house (anyone remember the Disney Channel original movie?…this totally reminded me of that!) Side note: I just ordered The Death of Mrs. Westaway because someone said if I liked this one, I would like that one. Have y’all read it? Thoughts?

My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing

I’m sure y’all have heard me talk about My Lovely Wife, but all the hype around this thriller is the real deal. Oh my goodness this one is good. Right to the last sentence. It’s about a husband and wife who kill people for fun-totally original LOL I read this one last spring, but I remember thinking it would be perfect for October. If you haven’t read it, now is the perfect time!

Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier

Oh man, what a thriller. If there is such a thing as a romantic thriller, this one is it! Jar of Hearts is one of my all time favorites. It’s about a girl whose best friend goes missing when they are in high school and years later her remains are found. I was obsessed with this book and could not put it down. There are definite elements to it that make it perfect for this time of year. Highly Highly recommend it!

Verity by Colleen Hoover

Colleen Hoover isn’t known for her thrillers, so when she released Verity a couple of years ago, people were divided on their feelings and thoughts. I personally LOVED it! I read it during Christmas, but it would have been such a good Halloween read. It’s about a girl who is hired to finish a novel for a man’s wife who was involved in an accident that made her unable to finish the book. The girl moves into the house and spooky things begin to happen. The ending will leave you speechless and wondering how you feel. It is SO good!

Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger

Okay, I read Her Fearful Symmetry wayyyyyy back in high school. It was a thriller before thrillers became a thing. I picked it up because I loved The Time Traveler’s Wife and this one is written by the same author. I hardly remember anything about it because it’s been so long since I read it but it deals with two sisters and I think there’s a ghost involved? I’m rereading it this month, so if you want to join me and we discuss our thoughts. I remember loving it in high school, but after rereading another much loved high school book (A Knight in Shinning Armor) and having major differences in my opinion, I’m anxious to see how I will feel about this reread!

Have y’all read any of these spooky thrillers? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

What I read this week 🩷📖 It took me all wee What I read this week 🩷📖

It took me all week to read The Favorites by Layne Fargo, which usually means I’m not loving a book, but I’m thrilled that’s not the case with this book! It was just a super busy week for me so I didn’t read as much every day as I wanted, but I absolutely LOVED this book! It releases January 14, so mark your calendars now! I don’t even love figure skating/ ice dancing (honestly I’ve never even heard of this) and I still was obsessed with this book. Highly highly recommend!

Synopsis:

She might not have a famous name, funding, or her family’s support, but Katarina Shaw has always known that she was destined to become an Olympic skater. When she meets Heath Rocha, a lonely kid stuck in the foster care system, their instant connection makes them a formidable duo on the ice. Clinging to skating—and each other—to escape their turbulent lives, Kat and Heath go from childhood sweethearts to champion ice dancers, captivating the world with their scorching chemistry, rebellious style, and roller-coaster relationship.

Until a shocking incident at the Olympic Games brings their partnership to a sudden end.

As the ten-year anniversary of their final skate approaches, an unauthorized documentary reignites the public obsession with Shaw and Rocha, claiming to uncover the “real story” through interviews with their closest friends and fiercest rivals. Kat wants nothing to do with the documentary, but she can’t stand the thought of someone else defining her legacy. So, after a decade of silence, she’s telling her story: from the childhood tragedies that created her all-consuming bond with Heath to the clash of desires that tore them apart. Sensational rumors have haunted their every step for years, but the truth may be even more shocking than the headlines
